Our Story

The Amy Foundation was created in 2007  to provide education and to increase early detection procedures for breast cancer among women in central NJ who are without the financial means to obtain mammograms, diagnostic procedures, and genetic testing, and to work with our healthcare partners to help detect breast cancer in its earliest stages.  Funds raised through The Amy Foundation help us fight … to win … the battle against the devastating effects of breast cancer.

How common is breast cancer? The American Institute for Cancer Research stated that one in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. New Jersey ranks in the top 10 states for both breast cancer incidence and mortality rates. Middlesex County has the second highest mortality rate among N.J. counties for Hispanic women, the lowest percentage of women 40+ who have had a mammogram in the past two years, and the highest percentage of women 40-64 who are uninsured.

The Amy Foundation has one focus – early detection of breast cancer for underserved women. Rather than serving the patient population of one institution, The Amy Foundation is able to help satisfy breast health issues at its four healthcare partner institutions. The population of patients served through The Amy Foundation is broadened to areas throughout central New Jersey.

Gifts to The Amy Foundation help to make early detection measures for breast cancer accessible to all women throughout our area. With your help, The Amy Foundation can help  underserved women in our communities become aware of the importance of early detection and receive life-saving  measures to detect this disease early, when it’s most treatable.

Make a Difference

Statistics show that the earlier a tumor is diagnosed, the better the survival rate. For many women who struggle to put food on the table for their families, having a preventative procedure for breast cancer is not a high priority, and gaining an awareness of why and how to seek assistance is not readily available.  Yet there remains a substantial need for early detection services as breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed malignancies among women.

Many individuals who are stranded and/or isolated because of low incomes or language barriers cannot afford healthcare premiums or co-pays. Without early detection procedures, women in the population served through The Amy Foundation are more likely to receive a late-stage breast cancer diagnosis and are, therefore, three times more likely to die from the disease than are women with comprehensive health- insurance plans. Lack of knowledge and insurance represent major obstacles in obtaining adequate breast health care in general.

The mantra of The Amy Foundation is “early detection of breast cancer saves lives.”

Since its inception, The Amy Foundation has been committed to providing uninsured and underinsured women throughout central New Jersey with greater life-saving early- detection measures in the fight against breast cancer. Support of The Amy Foundation can  make a difference in helping us win the battle against the devastating effects of breast cancer.
